Introducing the Tolumnia variegata - White Form: A Beautiful Caribbean Epiphytic Orchid
The Tolumnia variegata, also known as the White Form, is a stunning and compact orchid species native to the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Haiti. This unique orchid thrives in fairly exposed conditions, growing on the tips of branches, shrubs, and small trees. Its free-blooming nature and temperature tolerance make it a delightful addition to any orchid collection.
This orchid variety truly shines when cultivated outdoors alongside Cymbidiums, where it can be displayed in hanging wooden baskets. The symbiotic relationship between these orchids enhances their growth and flowering potential, creating a visually captivating arrangement. However, if you prefer indoor cultivation, the Tolumnia variegata can still thrive when grown alongside Phalaenopsis orchids.
To ensure optimal growth, this species prefers to be grown on slabs or in pots with charcoal as a medium. Its equitant, creeping nature allows it to reach a height of 1.5-7.0 cm, with very short and erect stems. The leaves, measuring 1.5-7.0 cm in length and 0.3-1.1 cm in width, are fleshy to coriaceous, bilaterally flattened, and possess a channeled upper side. With their linear to elliptic-lanceolate shape and serrulated edges, the leaves add an elegant touch to the overall appearance of the plant.
One of the most remarkable features of the Tolumnia variegata is its beautiful flowers, which can last up to three months. The 1/2" flowers are borne on spikes with 5 to 10 blooms, creating a charming cluster. The blooms, typically white in color, occasionally display shades of purple. The base of the inner petals exhibits hues of brown or purple, while the narrowing of the lip between its side plots at the base of the middle plot is a vibrant yellow.
This orchid species is a true testament to the breathtaking beauty found in nature. The Tolumnia variegata will add a touch of elegance and exotic flair to any space, whether it's showcased in a hanging wooden basket outdoors or in a well-lit indoor setting. With its tolerance to various temperatures and its remarkable blooming ability, this orchid is a must-have for orchid enthusiasts and collectors alike.
This is a blooming size, mounted in a 2" x 6" wood plate, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!
Please note that Tolumnia variegata requires adequate care and attention to thrive. It is essential to provide the right amount of light, moisture, and appropriate fertilization to ensure its health and longevity. Remember to consult specific care guidelines or seek advice from experienced orchid growers to optimize the growing conditions for this captivating orchid species.
