Lycaste macrophylla is a striking orchid species native to Central and South America, ranging from Costa Rica and Panama to Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Bolivia. Found in diverse habitats, this species thrives in tropical and montane rainforests at elevations of 400 to 2000 meters, growing as a terrestrial, lithophyte, or even epiphyte. With its large, attractive flowers and lush green foliage, Lycaste macrophylla is ideal for intermediate to advanced growers seeking a beautiful, yet rewarding orchid to cultivate.

Description:

Lycaste macrophylla is a medium to large-sized orchid, capable of reaching up to 75 cm in height. It features ovoid-oblong pseudobulbs, each supporting 2 to 3 large, non-deciduous leaves, which are up to 75 cm long. The orchid blooms in the summer and fall, producing fragrant, waxy flowers, measuring up to 11 cm in diameter. The color of the flowers varies from olive-green, chocolate-brown, and mahogany shades, with white petals often speckled in pink or red. The distinctive lip is white, adding an elegant contrast to the darker sepals.

Cultivation Tips:

Light: Lycaste macrophylla requires moderate light levels between 12,000 and 23,000 lux. Filtered sunlight or partial shade is ideal, as direct exposure to intense midday sun can cause leaf burn. Ensure consistent air movement around the plant to prevent overheating and promote healthy growth.

Temperature: This orchid thrives in warm to hot conditions, with day temperatures ranging from 26-28°C (78-82°F) and night temperatures between 14-16°C (57-61°F). The plant benefits from a temperature drop of 11-13°C between day and night to mimic its natural habitat.

Humidity: Lycaste macrophylla needs high humidity levels, around 80%, throughout the year. Maintain this with regular misting, a humidifier, or by placing the plant on a humidity tray.

Watering: This species prefers abundant water, especially during its active growing period. However, the substrate must be well-draining to prevent root rot. Water thoroughly but avoid letting the roots sit in soggy conditions. During the winter, watering can be slightly reduced, but never allow the plant to dry out completely.

Fertilizer: Fertilize Lycaste macrophylla weekly during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength. In spring and early summer, use a fertilizer with higher nitrogen content to promote vigorous growth. Switch to a fertilizer rich in phosphorus in late summer and fall to support flowering.

Potting and Substrate: Plant Lycaste macrophylla in a loose, fast-draining medium such as bark mixed with sphagnum moss or perlite. Small pots are recommended, as they allow the roots to dry quickly between waterings. Repot every two years, preferably when new roots emerge, to avoid damaging the root system. Lycaste macrophylla can also be mounted on cork or tree trunks, but mounted plants require daily watering and high humidity.

Rest Period: Although Lycaste macrophylla has no true dormancy, reduce watering in winter, especially if the plant is grown in lower light conditions. During this period, also cut back on fertilization.

This is a blooming size imported bare root orchid; newly repotted in a 3" or 4" pot; about 1 to 2 years to bloom; Grown from seed; Limited!

With proper care, Lycaste macrophylla will reward you with stunning, fragrant blooms that last for months, making it a prized addition to any orchid collection.
