Laelia briegeri ‘Star of Brazil’ is a charming miniature to small-sized orchid species native to Brazil. Found in the Diamantina region of Minas Gerais at elevations of 980-1400 meters, this orchid thrives on sandstone with its roots nestled among mosses, lichens, and low vegetation. This species, first described by Cássio Van den Berg in 2008, is known for its vibrant yellow flowers that bloom in late spring.

Description:

Laelia briegeri is a warm growing orchid that reaches a height of 6-20 cm. It features small, cylindrical pseudobulbs, 3-10 cm long, each carrying a single, stiff, coriaceous leaf. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate and 3-10 cm long. The orchid produces a terminal, erect inflorescence, 20-25 cm long, bearing a single bright yellow flower. The flowers, 4.0-5.5 cm in diameter, have wide petals that open wide, creating a beautiful display.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Laelia briegeri requires bright, filtered light levels between 30,000-40,000 lux. Avoid exposing the plant to direct midday sunlight. Ensure constant, strong air movement around the plant.

  • Temperature: This orchid is thermophilic, preferring warm temperatures. In summer, maintain daytime temperatures between 24-26°C and nighttime temperatures around 16-17°C. During winter, the plant thrives with daytime temperatures of 21-23°C and nighttime temperatures around 11-12°C. Aim for a daily temperature amplitude of 7-11°C.

  • Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, around 80%, for most of the year. In winter and early spring, humidity can be reduced slightly to 70-75%.

  • Substrate and Repotting: Laelia briegeri does best in small pots with a very loose, well-permeable substrate. This allows the roots to dry quickly after watering, preventing rot. A suitable substrate might include pieces of broken sandstone mixed with chopped ferns. Repotting is recommended when new roots begin to grow.

  • Watering: During active growth from spring to autumn, water frequently, ensuring the roots dry quickly afterward. As autumn progresses and new growths mature, gradually reduce watering. In winter, during the plant's rest period, water sparingly, only misting occasionally to prevent excessive drying.

  • Fertilizer: Feed Laelia briegeri weekly during the active growing season with a diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4-1/2 strength). Use a fertilizer high in nitrogen from spring to mid-summer, switching to one higher in phosphorus in late summer and autumn.

  • Rest Period: In winter, Laelia briegeri requires a 2-3 month dry rest period. Watering should be reduced significantly, with occasional misting to prevent too much drying. Avoid fertilization until spring growth resumes.

Laelia briegeri is a delightful, compact orchid species ideal for growers looking to add a vibrant splash of yellow to their collection. Thriving in warm, humid conditions, and requiring careful attention to light and watering, this species rewards its caretakers with stunning, bright yellow blooms each spring.
