Cattleya bradei, commonly known as Brade's Cattleya, is a charming mini-miniature orchid species native to the rocky regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This captivating lithophyte thrives in the cracks of lichen-covered rocks at altitudes of 1200-1400 meters. Described by Cássio Van den Berg in 2008, this species is known for its bright yellow flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer.

Cultivation Tips:

Light: Cattleya bradei requires bright light levels of 25,000-35,000 lux with a 12-hour photoperiod. Direct morning sunlight is beneficial, but from May to August, it's advisable to shield the plant from the intense midday sun (12 PM - 4 PM).

Temperature:

  • Summer: Daytime temperatures of 24-26°C and nighttime temperatures of 16-17°C.
  • Winter: Daytime temperatures of 21-23°C and nighttime temperatures of 11-12°C.

Humidity: This species thrives in high humidity levels around 80%, which can drop to 70-75% during the winter months.

Substrate, Growing Media, and Repotting: Cattleya bradei prefers to grow in a vase using a substrate mixture of pumice stone, lava rock, and seramis. This lightweight mix ensures good aeration and prevents root suffocation. Use a medium-small pot to accommodate new growths for up to two seasons, avoiding overly large pots that retain moisture for too long. Repot during the growing period to minimize root disturbance, which can stress the plant.

Watering: During the growing period (March-September), water frequently to keep the substrate moist but not soggy. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.

Fertilizer: Fertilize with 1/4 of the recommended dose of a suitable liquid orchid fertilizer, added to the watering water every 7-10 days. Suspend fertilization during the rest period.

Rest Period: From December to February, Cattleya bradei requires a winter rest period with reduced temperatures (21-23°C during the day and 11-12°C at night) and minimal watering to keep the substrate just moist. Increase watering frequency if excessive puckering of pseudobulbs is observed. Maintain air humidity at 70-75%. End the rest period gradually in March when new growths appear, returning to normal care conditions.

This is a blooming size imported bare root orchid division; newly repotted in a 4" clay pot; about 1 to 2 years to bloom; Grown from seed; Limited!

Add this exquisite and resilient mini-miniature orchid to your collection and enjoy its vibrant blooms and unique growing habit. Cattleya bradei is a delightful species that will thrive with the right care and attention.
