Grammatocymbidium Memoria Nathan Newman
(Grcym. Star Festival × Gram. scriptum)
Grammatocymbidium Memoria Nathan Newman is a stunning hybrid that showcases the best qualities of its parentage, combining the resilience of Grcym. Star Festival with the exotic beauty of Gram. scriptum.
This impressive orchid produces tall, arching spikes adorned with numerous pale greenish yellow flowers, creating an elegant display above its large, robust pseudobulbs.
A complex hybrid, it thrives in warm, humid conditions while also tolerating cooler temperatures, making it an adaptable and rewarding choice for collectors and growers.
Cultivation Tips:
- Temperature & Humidity: Prefers warm to intermediate conditions (65–85°F / 18–29°C) with high humidity levels (60–80%). It can tolerate cooler temperatures but grows best in a consistently warm environment.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light to moderate direct sunlight. Similar to Grammatophyllum orchids, it thrives under 60–80% sunlight but should be protected from intense midday sun to prevent leaf burn.
- Watering: Keep the potting media evenly moist but never waterlogged. During active growth, water frequently, reducing slightly in cooler months. In dry seasons, watering twice a day may be beneficial.
- Potting Media: A well-draining mix is essential. Ideal options include bark, perlite, charcoal, coconut fiber, or a mix incorporating peanut husks for added aeration.
- Airflow: Ensure good ventilation around the plant to prevent fungal and bacterial issues, especially in humid conditions.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer (NPK 20-20-20) weekly during active growth. Occasionally supplement with B1 to encourage strong root development. If the plant is maturing and forming multiple pseudobulbs, additional phosphorus can support healthy flowering.
- Flowering Preparation: To encourage blooming, reduce watering slightly for about two weeks, allowing a brief dry period. Water the roots but avoid wetting the leaves during this time.
- Support: Well-rooted plants typically do not need staking to keep their flower spikes upright, making them relatively easy to maintain.
This is a blooming size bareroot imported division, newly repotted in a 4" or 5" pot, about 20" tall, approx. 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!
With proper care, Grammatocymbidium Memoria Nathan Newman will reward growers with its long-lasting, showy blooms, bringing a touch of elegance and exotic beauty to any collection.
