Introducing the Angraecum magdalenae - Madagascar's White Elegance

Originating from the lush landscapes of Madagascar, the Angraecum magdalenae, also known as "Madalaine's Angraecum," graces its native habitat by lithophytically clinging to or nestling near quartzite boulders amidst the leafy embrace, thriving at altitudes ranging from 800 to 2000 meters above sea level.

Botanical Beauty: Madalaine's Angraecum is a medium-sized orchid, flourishing in both warm and cool conditions. Its growth habit is lithophytic and monopodial, adorned with 6 to 8 short, fleshy-coriaceous leaves that are oblong-ligulate in shape, bearing unequal bilobes at their apices.

A Symphony of Snow-White Blooms: In the spring through summer months, this Snow-White Angraecum unveils its ethereal beauty. Delicate, fragrant flowers emerge on a bracteate inflorescence, measuring 2 to 3 cm in length. The inflorescence boasts triangular floral bracts in a vibrant yellow hue, originating just below the first leaf. With the potential to produce between 1 to 5 magnificent, large, white blossoms, this orchid captivates with its waxy, soft-white petals, each spanning approximately 10 cm in diameter and featuring medium-sized spurs.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Angraecum magdalenae thrives in bright sunlight and can tolerate direct morning and evening sun. However, during scorching summer afternoons, especially for windows facing south, protect the orchid from direct sunlight by placing it behind a curtain or shading it with other plants to prevent sunburn.

  • Temperature: This orchid prefers moderate temperatures, with optimal results achieved under a moderately cool regimen. Maintain day temperatures at 18-24ยฐC and night temperatures at 14-18ยฐC. To ensure successful home cultivation, always keep the night temperature at least 4ยฐC lower than the daytime temperature.

  • Humidity: The Snow-White Angraecum requires a humidity level of 60-65% (ideally 70-80%). Inadequate humidity can hinder its growth, leading to dry roots and yellowing leaves.

  • Growing Medium and Repotting: This orchid can be cultivated in pots, hanging lattice baskets, or mounted on blocks. A mixture of coniferous bark and charcoal is an ideal substrate. When growing on blocks, place a moss interlayer between the roots and the block to prevent rapid drying. While repotting is discouraged, do so only when necessary, such as in cases of substrate salinization or compaction, extreme pH levels, and similar issues. Spring is the best time for transplantation.

  • Watering: The frequency and amount of watering depend on the overall temperature conditions. Orchids on blocks should be watered daily in the morning to allow the roots to dry out by evening. For potted orchids, ensure that excess water drains freely to prevent root rot. Allow the substrate to dry out between waterings.

  • Fertilization: During the growth period, fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a standard orchid fertilizer, following the recommended concentration. Consider both root and foliar feeding for optimal results. An equal-parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer (e.g., NPK = 3-3-3 or 8-8-8) is ideal. Adjust the fertilizer composition as the growing season progresses.

  • Rest Period: Angraecum magdalenae does not require a rest period to stimulate flowering. However, if flowering issues arise, reduce watering from mid-October onwards and maintain the orchid at temperatures not exceeding 20ยฐC.

This is a blooming size in a 4" pot about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

With these care tips, you can cultivate the exquisite Angraecum magdalenae, a botanical treasure from Madagascar, and enjoy its enchanting beauty in your own space.
