Zygopetalum triste Very compact for the genus, this species produce up to 6 blooms on upright spikes with very pleasantly fragrant flowers. This species is native to Brazil and grows at an elevation of around 1000-1800 meters and can be found growing in detritus or fissures in rock outcrops. This species is one of the more miniature in the genus Zygopetalum. The plant grows with rhizomes and pseudobulbs mostly under the potting mix.
Several 2-2.5" flowers are borne on 9" tall stems that produce a fragrance that ranges from peppery to spicy, developing as the flower matures. The color is fantastic with a bright purple lip that can be solid in color or brushed in white stripes. The sepals and petals are colored in a rich mahogany. The flowers can last 4 to 6 weeks.
These don't like to dry at the roots, so only allow the mix to approach dryness between watering.
