The Psychopsis papilio var. tipo, the standard color form, is equally captivating. Its bronze and gold flowers evoke the image of a butterfly, with the intricate patterns and colors of the petals giving an illusion of a delicate insect in mid-flight. This form, too, is highly sought after for its continuous flowering and is a perfect complement to any orchid collection, providing both beauty and a touch of nature's wonder.

On the other hand, the Psychopsis papilio var. alba is a rare treasure among orchids, captivating enthusiasts with its butterfly-like blooms in bright yellow and cream shades. The flowers resemble a butterfly in mid-flight, making this orchid a mesmerizing and sought-after addition to any collection. Known for its sequential bloom stems, it continuously produces flowers, ensuring a long-lasting display of beauty. This selfing of the alba form stands out for its exclusivity and remarkable aesthetics, making it a prized gem among collectors. Its unique sequential blooming habit ensures that while one bloom is in full glory, others are just waiting to emerge, offering months of uninterrupted floral display. The Psychopsis papilio var. alba isn't just visually stunning—it’s also highly rewarding to cultivate.

Cultivation Tips:
Light: Psychopsis papilio thrives in moderate light, but brighter conditions, akin to those preferred by Cattleya orchids, can encourage better flowering. If you choose to increase the light levels, ensure good airflow to prevent leaf stress and burning. Striking the right balance is key: too little light will leave your foliage dark green, while too much light may cause yellowing or reddening.

Watering and Fertilizing: Water your Psychopsis lightly after repotting to prevent fungal or bacterial infections. Mist the plant daily during warmer weather, with occasional heavier watering to maintain humidity around the roots. As new roots establish themselves in the media, reduce misting. Use a balanced fertilizer (such as 20-10-20 or 7-8-6) every third or fourth watering, especially when the plant is actively growing. Take care to prevent fertilizer buildup on the plant’s emerging growths.

Potting Media: These orchids dislike frequent repotting. A rapidly draining mix will extend the time between repotting, which should ideally be done in the spring when new roots emerge. Cypress mulch, Douglas fir-based mixes, or tree fern fiber are excellent choices for their ability to drain quickly and maintain freshness over time. A snug-fitting plastic pot is often the best container option for this orchid.

Air and Humidity: Psychopsis orchids benefit from high humidity paired with excellent air movement. Good air circulation helps the plant dry out between waterings, preventing the development of pathogens that thrive in stagnant, moist environments. In high-humidity conditions, water less frequently but never allow the media to dry out completely.

Bloom Spike Care: Allow the bloom spikes to develop uninterrupted unless repotting becomes necessary. If you do repot, consider removing the spike to redirect the plant's energy towards reestablishing itself in its new container. Always wait to trim a bloom spike until it turns brown and dry.

This is a near blooming size imported bare root orchid division, newly repotted in a 3" pot, about 2 to 3 years to bloom, grown from seed, very limited!

Whether you choose the Psychopsis papilio var. alba or the standard bronze and gold Psychopsis papilio var. tipo, these orchids will bring nature’s delicate artistry into your home, with their butterfly-like blooms continuing to surprise and delight.
