Grammatophyllum martae x Grammatophyllum stapeliiflorum
Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand is a stunning primary hybrid orchid, created in 2008 by crossing Grammatophyllum martae with Grammatophyllum stapeliiflorum. Originating from the Philippines, this orchid is known for its tremendous size and striking floral display. Grammatophyllum orchids are renowned for their towering flower spikes, which can reach 2 to 3 feet in height, each adorned with 50 to 100 vibrant blooms. These flowers, blooming from summer to fall, can last up to two months, making the Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand a show-stopping addition to any collection.
Cultivation Tips:
Light and Shade: Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand thrives in abundant, indirect light. An east-facing window is ideal, providing the necessary early morning sun, but a south-facing window can also work with some light shading from February to October. Outdoors, they prefer filtered light, such as under a pine tree or shrub. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to prevent sunburn on the leaves. For indoor cultivation under artificial light, LEDs are recommended, offering a wide range of options to suit various needs.
Temperature and Humidity: This orchid prefers daytime temperatures between 72°F and 85°F (22°C to 30°C) with a 10°F (6°C) drop at night. This temperature variation helps trigger flowering and promotes robust growth. Humidity levels should be maintained between 45% and 60%. A humidifier or humidity tray can help achieve this, but ensure the plant's roots do not sit in water to avoid rot.
Watering: During the growing season, water Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand frequently and heavily, especially when flower spikes are forming. In winter, reduce watering slightly, watching for signs of underwatering, such as browning leaf tips. The pseudobulbs should remain plump during summer and only slightly shriveled in winter. Morning watering is recommended to prevent bacterial growth. Use low-alkalinity water, such as rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water, to prevent mineral buildup.
Feeding: Fertilize regularly during the growing season with a specialized orchid food, like Green Jungle Orchid Food. If using bark mix as a potting medium, fertilize with each watering and flush the medium monthly to remove salt and mineral buildup. For sphagnum moss, fertilize every third watering throughout the year.
Potting: Repot Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand every two years in spring, using New Zealand Sphagnum Moss or Medium-grade Traditional Orchid Bark Mix. Larger specimens may require Large-grade Bark Mix. Choose a pot that allows for 2-3 years of growth. During repotting, remove old, broken-down media, trim dead roots and pseudobulbs, and position the plant so its oldest pseudobulbs are at the edge of the new pot. Firmly press the potting medium around the roots to secure the plant. If needed, use a support ring or rhizome clip to stabilize the newly potted orchid.
Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand is an impressive primary hybrid orchid known for its towering flower spikes and vibrant blooms. This orchid thrives with bright, filtered light, warm temperatures, and moderate humidity. It requires frequent watering during the growing season and benefits from regular fertilization. With proper care, including timely repotting and attention to its specific needs, Grammatophyllum Jumbo Grand will reward growers with a stunning and long-lasting floral display, making it a standout addition to any collection.
