Grammangis ellisii var. alba is a captivating epiphytic orchid native to the lush, humid forests of Madagascar, particularly thriving from sea level to altitudes of 1300 meters. Renowned for its resilience and adaptability, this species flourishes in both warm and cool climates, often found overhanging rivers in coastal rainforests. The orchid is noted for its striking large, greenish-yellow flowers that are both showy and fragrant, providing a unique and exotic addition to any collection.

Key Features:

  •  Endemic to North and East Madagascar's humid forests, ranging from sea level to 1300 meters.
  • Large, hot to cool growing epiphyte with high thermal tolerance.
  • Features ovoid-tetragonal pseudobulbs enveloped by several sheaths, and 3 to 5 oblong, plicate leaves that are obliquely rounded at the tips.
  • Blooms in spring and summer with a basal, arching inflorescence that can reach up to 90 cm long, producing many waxy, long-lasting, and fragrant flowers.

Cultivating Tips:

Light:

Provide bright, indirect light. This orchid thrives in conditions where it receives ample light but is protected from direct, harsh sunlight which can scorch the leaves.

Temperature:

Given its high thermal tolerance, Grammangis ellisii var. alba can grow well in a range of temperatures. Maintain a warm environment (18-30°C / 64-86°F) during the growing season and a slightly cooler setting during its rest period.
Watering:

During the active growth period, water generously to keep the medium moist but not waterlogged. In winter, reduce watering to allow the plant a semi-dry rest period once the pseudobulbs have matured.

Humidity:

High humidity (60-80%) is ideal. If grown indoors, consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier to maintain adequate moisture levels in the air.
Potting Medium:

Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as a combination of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Repot every 2-3 years or when the medium begins to break down.

Feeding:

Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding during the plant’s semi-dry rest period in winter.

Air Circulation:

Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal infections and promote healthy growth.

Expect this orchid to bloom in spring and summer. The flowers are borne on a long, arching inflorescence that emerges from the base of the new pseudobulb. Each blossom is waxy, fragrant, and long-lasting, adding a touch of exotic beauty and a delightful scent to your growing space.

This is a near blooming size in a 4" pot about 2 to 3 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

Grammangis ellisii var. alba is not just an orchid; it’s a testament to the incredible diversity and adaptability of Madagascar's flora. Whether you are a seasoned orchid enthusiast or a beginner, this species will reward you with its robust growth and stunning floral displays.
