Indulge in the allure of Catasetum planiceps, a captivating orchid native to the lush landscapes of Venezuela, Guianas, Surinam, Peru, and northern Brazil. Known for its robust presence and distinctive floral display, this orchid thrives in lowland coastal forests and on the lower slopes of coastal mountains, embracing elevations between 100 to 700 meters.

Catasetum planiceps presents as a large-sized orchid, characterized by fusiform pseudobulbs up to 15 cm long and 2.6 cm wide. These pseudobulbs are enveloped by whitish, papery sheaths at their base, supporting elliptic-lanceolate leaves that can reach up to 37 cm long and 8 cm wide. The orchid blooms in spring and summer, showcasing medium-sized flowers on erect inflorescences, often reaching heights between 25.5 to 75 cm.

The blooms of Catasetum planiceps are a sight to behold, with male flowers boasting yellow-green sepals and petals adorned with dark green longitudinal stripes. The lip is glossy and green outside, darker yellow-green inside with striking dark green striping within the sac. Female flowers, although less frequently seen, add to the intrigue of this species.

Cultivation Tips:

Light: Catasetum planiceps thrives in bright, indirect light, ideally receiving 30000-60000 lux. During active growth, place the orchid in nearly full sunlight (20% shade), ensuring it receives ample light for robust development. If grown indoors, adequate supplemental lighting can substitute natural sunlight.

Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures reminiscent of its native habitat, where nights rarely dip below 18°C and daytime highs range from 29 to 35°C. Consistency in warmth, especially a minimum night temperature around 21°C, encourages healthy growth and flowering.

Humidity: This orchid appreciates high humidity, ideally between 60-70%. During its growing season, aim for 70% humidity to foster optimal conditions for new growth and blooming. Providing humidity trays or grouping plants can help maintain appropriate moisture levels.

Substrate and Potting: Use a well-draining medium such as fir bark, osmunda fiber, and charcoal in varying ratios. Wooden baskets or pots allow for excellent aeration, crucial for the orchid's roots. Repot annually or at least every two years, preferably when new growth emerges and roots begin to develop.

Watering: During the growing season, maintain consistent moisture levels, allowing the substrate to slightly dry between waterings. Rainfall simulation, especially for basket-grown plants, supports healthy hydration without waterlogging.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer weekly during active growth or with every watering at a diluted strength. This regimen promotes strong foliage and vibrant flowering throughout the season.

Rest Period: Catasetum planiceps experiences a brief dormancy, marked by leaf fall and potential cessation of growth. Adjust watering schedules accordingly during this period to prevent overwatering and support the plant's natural cycle.
