Introducing the captivating Calanthe rubens, a terrestrial orchid native to the lush landscapes of Thailand and Malaysia. With its striking appearance and relatively easy cultivation requirements, this orchid is sure to add a touch of exotic beauty to any collection.

Appearance: Calanthe rubens boasts medium to large-sized pseudobulbs that reach heights of up to 50 cm. Its distinctive flask-shaped pseudobulbs, adorned with deciduous plicate leaves, create an impressive display. During the fall through winter, it produces elegant blooms on erect inflorescences, showcasing petals in hues ranging from pink with scarlet stripes to white with scarlet accents, adding a burst of color to its surroundings.

Cultivation Tips:

Light: Provide bright, filtered light to mimic its natural habitat, avoiding direct sunlight during the midday hours. Ensure consistent air movement to promote healthy growth.

Temperature: Mimic the tropical climate of its native regions with average summer temperatures of 29-30°C during the day and 23°C at night. In winter, maintain daytime temperatures of 30-32°C and nighttime temperatures of 18-20°C, with appropriate fluctuations between day and night.

Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, ranging from 80-85% during the warmer months and 70-75% in the cooler seasons, replicating its natural environment.

Substrate and Repotting: Use a fertile, well-draining substrate mixture to support healthy growth. Repot annually after flowering, ensuring to divide and clean the pseudobulbs to encourage the development of new growths. During the winter dormancy period, store pseudobulbs in a cool, dry location until new growth appears in spring.

Watering: Water generously during active growth, ensuring excellent drainage to prevent waterlogging. Reduce watering during the winter months and flowering period, gradually increasing moisture levels as new growth emerges in spring.

Fertilizer: Apply a diluted orchid fertilizer weekly during the growing season, adjusting the dosage to 1/2-3/4 of the recommended strength to meet its nutrient requirements.

Rest Period: Reduce watering and cease fertilization during the winter months and flowering period, resuming regular care once new growth appears in spring.
