Introducing the captivating Bulbophyllum frostii, a gem hailing from the lush forests of Vietnam, occasionally spotted in the verdant landscapes of Thailand. Nestled amidst evergreen canopies at elevations of 1450 to 1500 meters, this orchid thrives as an epiphyte, adding a touch of natural elegance to any collection.

This mini-miniature wonder captures attention with its petite stature and distinctive features. Picture clusters of ovoid, olive-green pseudobulbs, spaced delicately at approximately 3 cm intervals. Each pseudobulb cradles a single, broad leaf, exuding a fleshy allure with its oblong-elliptic to ovate shape.

Come spring, Bulbophyllum frostii graces us with its fragrant blooms. Adorning a short, horizontal inflorescence, these glossy dark red flowers, reminiscent of Dutch wooden shoes, boast a rocking red lip, adding a playful charm to their allure. The plant is compact, and has a slight fragrance, more earthy than stinky.

To nurture this botanical treasure, heed these cultivation tips:

Light: Provide a gentle glow of 14000-16000 lux, avoiding direct sunlight which it shuns.

Temperature: Create an intermediate-hot to warm haven, maintaining temperatures between 22-25 °C during the day and 18-20 °C at night. In winter, a slight dip in temperature is permissible.

Humidity: Uphold humidity levels around 75% if mounted on a raft, or maintain a cozy 50-60% if potted.

Substrate and Repotting: Opt for a substrate like sphagnum or medium-sized bark (1.5-2 cm) if potting. Ensure ample aeration to prevent root rot, repotting as needed.

Watering: Keep substrate consistently moist throughout the year, adjusting frequency slightly in winter. Avoid prolonged dry spells, but don’t drown the roots.

Fertilizer: Treat delicately with a diluted fertilizer (1/6 of the recommended dose) once a month, taking care not to overwhelm its sensitive roots.

Rest Period: While it doesn’t demand a distinct rest period, adjust watering and fertilization in winter to align with its slowed growth.

This is a blooming size in a 4" pot, newly repotted, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

With these nurturing guidelines, Bulbophyllum frostii will flourish, rewarding your care with its delightful presence and occasional bursts of vibrant blooms. Embrace the enchantment of this botanical marvel, and let it weave its magic in your botanical sanctuary.
