Introducing the Exotic Sobennikoffia humbertiana Orchid: A True Gem from Madagascar
Delve into the enchanting world of Sobennikoffia humbertiana, a rare and exquisite orchid species native exclusively to the mystical landscapes of Madagascar. With its captivating beauty and unique growing requirements, this orchid promises to be a prized addition to any orchid enthusiast's collection.
Sobennikoffia humbertiana thrives in the central-southern regions of Madagascar, where it flourishes among rocky terrains amidst dry forests. Despite its preference for drier climates, it adapts well to varying conditions, showcasing its resilience and adaptability.
This medium-sized orchid boasts a robust stem adorned with long-lasting, strap-shaped leaves measuring 15-25 cm in length and 2.0-2.5 cm in width. Its arching inflorescence, spanning 30 to 40 cm, reveals a spectacle of fragrant flowers, transitioning from youthful white hues to a charming yellowish tint with age. Notably, its sepals exhibit a subtle green hue, adding a touch of elegance to its appearance.
The fragrance of the flowers is very spicy and pleasing. Flowering occurs in April and May, and the blooms last moderately well. As the flowers age, they turn an apricot color, which is maintained for 10—14 days. A well-grown plant should carry 3— 5 30- to 40-cm inflorescences, each with 9—14 flowers. The spurs are quite unique for angraecoid in that they turn up instead of down. The spreading flowers are white when young but become yellowish with age, have sepals with a strong green tint on the back, and have green in the throat of the lip. They are about 1.6 in. (4 cm) across, with sepals and petals that average 0.8 in. (2 cm) long by 0.4 in. (1 cm) wide and are very gracefully recurved in the apical 0.3 in. (0.7 cm). The 3-lobed lip is about 1 in. (2.5 cm) long by 0.6 in. (1.5 cm) wide and has a spur at its base that is about 1 in. (2.5 cm) long. The very thick column is about 0.1 in. (0.3 cm) long.
Cultivation Tips:
Light: Ensure a light level of 25000-35000 lux, with filtered or diffused sunlight, avoiding direct midday sun exposure. Adequate air circulation is essential for optimal growth.
Temperature: Maintain temperatures averaging 29-30°C during summer days and 18-19°C at night, with a diurnal range of 11-12°C, mimicking its native climate.
Humidity: Keep humidity levels at 70-75% in summer and autumn, gradually reducing to 60-65% during late winter and early spring.
Substrate and Repotting: Opt for well-drained containers or mount on tree-fern slabs, ensuring high humidity for mounted plants. Use a well-aerated, fast-draining medium such as medium-sized fir bark or shredded tree-fern fiber, incorporating perlite and sphagnum moss for moisture retention. Repot as new roots emerge to facilitate swift reestablishment.
Watering: Mimic the natural rainfall pattern, watering heavily during active growth periods while ensuring excellent drainage. Reduce watering in autumn after new growth matures.
Fertilization: Apply 1/4-1/2 strength fertilizer weekly during active growth, transitioning to high-nitrogen fertilizer in spring to midsummer, followed by phosphate-rich fertilizer in late summer and autumn.
Rest Period: During winter, maintain temperatures averaging 24-26°C during the day and 12°C at night, reducing watering frequency while ensuring plants receive occasional mistings to prevent dehydration. Resume fertilization and increase watering in spring as new growth emerges.
This is a blooming size in a 4" pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!
