Laelia kettieana, more commonly known as Cattleya kettieana. This charming orchid species is native to the mountainous regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where it thrives in rock fissures at elevations of 1500 to 2000 meters. This mini-miniature sized, warm intermediate growing lithophyte features clustered, almost globose pseudobulbs. Each pseudobulb supports a single, thick, leathery leaf, often purple-suffused and succulent, providing a striking contrast in any collection.

Laelia kettieana blooms in late spring to summer with a terminal inflorescence that is 5 to 7.5 cm long, bearing 1 to 5 flowers simultaneously. The flowers, approximately 1.23 cm in size, are known for their appealing, delicate appearance, making this species a delightful addition to any orchid enthusiast's collection.

Cultivation Tips:

Light: Laelia kettieana requires bright light, similar to other Laelia species. Providing full sunlight during the summer is beneficial, but ensure some shade to prevent leaf burn. Aim for a light level that mimics its natural habitat, where it receives filtered sunlight through forest canopies.

Temperature: This orchid prefers a notable temperature difference between day and night. Ideal daytime temperatures should range from 20-25°C (68-77°F), while nighttime temperatures should drop to around 10-15°C (50-59°F). This temperature variation helps simulate the natural conditions of its native habitat.

Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, around 60-80%, to replicate the orchid's natural environment. During drier periods, using a humidity tray or a humidifier can help maintain adequate moisture levels.

Watering: Water Laelia kettieana thoroughly but allow the growing medium to dry out slightly between waterings. During the summer, daily watering in the early morning is recommended to keep the plant hydrated and healthy. Reduce watering in winter, but do not let the substrate dry out completely.

Growing Medium: This orchid can be grown in small pots or baskets with a well-draining medium. A mix of bark, perlite, and charcoal works well to ensure good aeration and quick drying after watering. This prevents root rot and promotes healthy growth.

Fertilization: Fertilize Laelia kettieana every 1-2 weeks during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer at half the recommended strength. Reduce fertilization during the winter rest period to prevent nutrient buildup and encourage a natural growth cycle.

Repotting: Repotting should be done every 2-3 years or when the growing medium starts to break down. The best time to repot is in spring, just before new growth begins. Handle the roots carefully and select a pot size that allows for 1-2 years of growth.

Rest Period: In winter, provide a cooler rest period by reducing watering and keeping the temperature slightly lower. This mimics the natural dormant phase of the orchid and helps promote blooming in the following season.
