Cattleya percivaliana aureana, is a stunning orchid that captivates with its vibrant, festive colors and rich heritage. Native to the high-altitude forests of Venezuela and Colombia, this orchid is typically found growing epiphytically on tree tops or lithophytically on moss-covered rocks at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters above sea level.

The aureana variety is distinguished by its deep orange and gold lip, which adds a radiant touch to its purple and lavender blooms. The large, fragrant flowers, approximately 12 cm in diameter, feature elongated-lanceolate sepals and wavy, elliptical petals. The lip of the flower is particularly striking, with a golden yellow interior and purple-red veins, creating a bold contrast that makes it a standout addition to any collection.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to mimic the orchid’s natural high-altitude environment. While it can tolerate direct morning and evening sun, protect it from the intense midday sun to avoid leaf burn. Aim for at least 10 hours of light daily.

  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 18-30°C (64-86°F) during the day and not below 10°C (50°F) at night. A slight temperature drop at night is ideal to replicate natural conditions.

  • Humidity: Keep humidity levels between 60-80%. Ensure adequate moisture, especially during the growing season, to prevent the plant from becoming stressed or developing problems.

  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer), ensuring the potting medium dries out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot. Ensure good drainage to prevent water stagnation.

  • Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix of large pieces of bark, charcoal, and sphagnum moss. For mounting, place a layer of moss between the roots and the block to retain moisture. Repot in spring before new growth begins, minimizing root disturbance.

  • Air Circulation: Provide good air circulation to promote healthy growth and flowering. Ensure the growing area is well-ventilated.

  • Flowering: Expect blooms from late November to December. A well-established plant can produce 2-6 flowers per growth, each lasting up to four weeks.
