Angraecum didieri is a charming miniature to small-sized orchid, native to the humid evergreen forests of Madagascar. Growing epiphytically on trees at altitudes ranging from 600 to 1500 meters, this orchid boasts a short stem, reaching up to 20 cm in length, and is adorned with 5 to 7 ligulate, coriaceous leaves, which are unequally and obtusely bilobed at the tips.

Flowering between April and June in the northern hemisphere, Angraecum didieri produces a short inflorescence with 2 to 3 bracts, culminating in a solitary, fragrant, white flower about 5 cm in diameter. These stunning blooms emerge from the sinuses between the leaves, adding a touch of elegance to any orchid collection.

Cultivating Tips:

Light: Angraecum didieri thrives in bright light and can tolerate direct morning and evening sun. Ensure it receives adequate sunlight for optimal growth and blooming.

Temperature: This orchid prefers warm temperatures but can adapt to cooler conditions. Maintain the following temperature ranges for best results:

  • Day: 21-35°C (70-95°F)
  • Night: 16-21°C (60-70°F)

It's crucial to ensure a night temperature at least 5°C (ideally 7-10°C) lower than the daytime temperature to mimic its natural habitat and promote healthy growth.

Humidity: Aim for a humidity level of 50% (ideally 65-80%). Insufficient humidity can inhibit growth, cause roots to dry out, and result in yellowing leaves. Regular misting or the use of a humidity tray can help maintain the desired humidity levels.

Substrate and Repotting: Angraecum didieri can be grown in pots, hanging lattice baskets, or mounted on blocks. Use a substrate mix of coniferous bark with charcoal, ensuring a thick drainage layer at the bottom. When mounting on blocks, add a layer of moss between the roots and the block to prevent rapid drying. Top the roots with live or dry sphagnum moss.

Repotting should be done sparingly, only when absolutely necessary, as Angraecum didieri can react negatively to disturbance, potentially delaying blooming for 1-2 years.

Watering: Watering frequency depends on the ambient temperature. The higher the temperature, the more frequent and abundant the watering should be. Allow the substrate to dry out well between waterings, but avoid letting it stay completely dry for more than two days.

Fertilizer: Fertilize during the period of new growth to support healthy development and blooming.

Rest Period: Angraecum didieri does not require a rest period in winter, making it a relatively low-maintenance orchid compared to other species.

This is a blooming size orchid in a 3" pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, Limited!

With its fragrant, elegant blooms and manageable care requirements, Angraecum didieri is a delightful addition to any orchid enthusiast's collection.
